He was a director of [[Ellis and Burnand]] from 1903,<ref name=":0">{{Cite web|url=https://teara.govt.nz/en/biographies/3b60/burnand-john-henry-davis|title=Burnand, John Henry Davis|last=Taonga|first=New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage Te Manatu|website=teara.govt.nz|language=en|access-date=2020-03-15}}</ref> formed with [[John William Ellis]], which was initially based in [[Ōtorohanga]]. The company had sawmills and logging railways, such as the [[Ellis and Burnand Tramway, Ongarue]], in many surrounding areas.
