He was born in Trawsgoed, Llanafan, Cardiganshire,<ref name="1911census">''1911 England Census''</ref> and educated at Wrexham Grammar School<ref name="whoswho">''Who Was Who 1897–2007''. London, A & C Black, 2007 {{ISBN|978-0-19-954087-7}}</ref> and Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge.<ref>{{acad|id=RCRS892JH|name=Richards, John Harold}}</ref> He was ordained in 1896<ref>''The Times'', 24 September 1895, p. 4, "Ordinations Ely"</ref> and began his ecclesiastical career with a curacy at St Matthew's, Cambridge.<ref>''The Clergy List, Clerical Guide and Ecclesiastical Directory''. London, John Phillips, 1900</ref> After this he held incumbencies at Bordesley, Coleshill and St Augustine's, Edgbaston. From 1920 to 1938 he was Archdeacon of Aston.
