'''Harmaja''' ({{langx|sv|Gråhara}}) is an island and a lighthouse outside Helsinki, south of the Suomenlinna sea fortress. The island has been functioning as a landmark since the 16th century. A landmark structure was built on the island in the 18th century and a light house in 1883.<ref>{{cite rowlett|fin1a|access-date=January 19, 2016}}</ref> The first lighthouse was only 7.3 m high and it soon proved to be too low. In 1900 the height was doubled by creating a rectangular brick building on a granite base. A large foghorn alerted ships in fog and in bad visibility. Harmaja received the world's first directed and undirected radio beacon in 1936. The lighthouse is fully automated today.
There is also a pilot station on the island.
During the 1952 Summer Olympics this was the center of the Olympic sailing event. {{clear}} ==Climate== {{Weather box | location = Helsinki Harmaja 1991–2020 normals, records 1993–present | metric first = Yes | single line = Yes | Jan record high C = 7.6 | Feb record high C = 7.5 | Mar record high C = 11.2 | Apr record high C = 16.1 | May record high C = 24.7 | Jun record high C = 27.4 | Jul record high C = 29.3 | Aug record high C = 27.0 | Sep record high C = 21.9 | Oct record high C = 16.0 | Nov record high C = 13.0 | Dec record high C = 8.7 | year record high C = 29.3 | Jan high C = -0.7 | Feb high C = -1.6 | Mar high C = 0.9 | Apr high C = 5.4 | May high C = 11.1 | Jun high C = 15.7 | Jul high C = 19.2 | Aug high C = 18.9 | Sep high C = 14.6 | Oct high C = 9.1 | Nov high C = 4.7 | Dec high C = 1.7 | year high C = 8.3 | Jan mean C = -2.5 | Feb mean C = -3.5 | Mar mean C = -1.0 | Apr mean C = 2.8 | May mean C = 8.2 | Jun mean C = 13.1 | Jul mean C = 16.8 | Aug mean C = 16.6 | Sep mean C = 12.6 | Oct mean C = 7.3 | Nov mean C = 3.1 | Dec mean C = 0.1 | year mean C = 6.1 | Jan low C = -4.7 | Feb low C = -5.8 | Mar low C = -3.2 | Apr low C = 1.1 | May low C = 6.2 | Jun low C = 11.2 | Jul low C = 14.8 | Aug low C = 14.8 | Sep low C = 10.9 | Oct low C = 5.9 | Nov low C = 1.5 | Dec low C = -1.9 | year low C = 4.2 | Jan record low C = -24.7 | Feb record low C = -24.3 | Mar record low C = -16.4 | Apr record low C = -9.9 | May record low C = -1.1 | Jun record low C = 3.4 | Jul record low C = 7.6 | Aug record low C = 7.9 | Sep record low C = 2.1 | Oct record low C = -5.7 | Nov record low C = -13.0 | Dec record low C = -20.5 | year record low C = -24.7 | Jan humidity = 90 | Feb humidity = 89 | Mar humidity = 85 | Apr humidity = 83 | May humidity = 80 | Jun humidity = 83 | Jul humidity = 84 | Aug humidity = 83 | Sep humidity = 83 | Oct humidity = 85 | Nov humidity = 88 | Dec humidity = 89 | year humidity = 85 | source = https://www.ilmatieteenlaitos.fi/ilmastollinen-vertailukausi https://kilotavu.com/asema-taulukko.php?asema=100996 }}
