Doukas is the Mayor of Athens, having assumed office on 1 January 2024, succeeding Kostas Bakoyannis.
==Scientific career== Haris Doukas field of expertise is related with the development of decision support systems for energy and climate policy, placing the human factor at the core of the modelling processes and policymaking towards sustainable development.
His integrative frameworks are based on co-creation with citizens, along with co-ownership where feasible.<ref>{{Cite web|date=2020-12-01|title=Climate policy and action: Citizens at the forefront|url=https://researchfeatures.com/climate-policy-action-citizens-forefront/|access-date=2021-02-06|website=Research Features|language=en-US}}</ref> Doukas uses linguistic variables for capturing the essence of human behaviour in energy and climate policymaking, enabling the design of policies that listen to "what people want" and "what people can do", which is fundamental for their success.
He has more than 150 scientific publications in international scientific journals with reviewers is the abovementioned fields, he is the co-author of the Greek book ''Multiple Criteria Decision Models for Energy and Environmental Systems'',<ref>{{Cite web|title=Χάρης Δούκας {{!}} Εκδόσεις Συμμετρία|url=https://www.simmetria.gr/|access-date=2021-02-06|website=Χάρης Δούκας {{!}} Εκδόσεις Συμμετρία|language=el}}</ref> the co-editor of the open-access book ''Understanding Risks and Uncertainties in Energy and Climate Policy: Multidisciplinary Methods and Tools for a Low Carbon Society''<ref>{{Cite book|url=https://www.springer.com/gp/book/9783030031510|title=Understanding Risks and Uncertainties in Energy and Climate Policy: Multidisciplinary Methods and Tools for a Low Carbon Society|date=2019|publisher=Springer International Publishing|doi=10.1007/978-3-030-03152-7|isbn=978-3-030-03151-0|s2cid=214416282|editor-last=Doukas|editor-first=Haris|language=en|editor-last2=Flamos|editor-first2=Alexandros|editor-last3=Lieu|editor-first3=Jenny }}</ref> and the co-author of the English book ''Multicriteria Portfolio Construction with Python''.<ref>{{Cite book|last1=Sarmas|first1=Elissaios|last2=Xidonas|first2=Panos|last3=Doukas|first3=Haris|date=2020|title=Multicriteria Portfolio Construction with Python|url=https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-030-53743-2|series=Springer Optimization and Its Applications|volume=163|language=en-gb|doi=10.1007/978-3-030-53743-2|isbn=978-3-030-53742-5|s2cid=242893440|issn=1931-6828}}</ref> Moreover, Doukas is an Associate Editor of the Operational Research International Journal<ref>{{Cite web|last=|first=|date=|title=Associate Editor|url=https://www.springer.com/journal/12351|access-date=2021-02-06|website=Operational Research An International Journal|language=en}}</ref> and the General Secretary of the Hellenic Operational Research Society (HELORS).
Haris Doukas participates as an expert at the World Renewable Energy Congress / Network (WREC / WREN) where he has received a special award for his contribution, the World Energy Council (WEC) and the EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network.<ref>{{Cite web|title=The Team {{!}} EU-GCC Clean Energy Technology Network|url=https://eugcc-cleanergy.net/team|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200731192418/http://eugcc-cleanergy.net/team|url-status=usurped|archive-date=July 31, 2020|access-date=2021-03-03|website=eugcc-cleanergy.net}}</ref>

On 30 June 2024 Doukas officially announced his candidacy for leader of PASOK hoping to take the place of Nikos Androulakis; hoping to unite the centre-left powers (Syriza, PASOK) in prospects of the Next greek elections (probably 2027), mostly due to the stagnation of PASOK in the 2024 European Parliament elections. Along with Doukas came several others wishing to succeed Androulakis including former Minister for Culture and Tourism Pavlos Geroulanos.<ref>[https://www.topontiki.gr/2024/06/22/pasok-xekinisan-ton-proeklogiko-agona-i-ipopsifii-archigi-ta-dilimmata-prin-apo-tin-esokommatiki-kalpi/ "ΠΑΣΟΚ: Ξεκίνησαν τον προεκλογικό αγώνα οι υποψήφιοι αρχηγοί – Τα διλήμματα πριν από την εσωκομματική κάλπη"].
