{{Short description|China's bans of South Korean cultural products}} The "'''Hallyu ban'''" refers to a series of policy restrictions imposed by China on the South Korean cultural products after the tensions between the two countries in 2016 due to the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system by South Korea. It includes restricting South Korean artists from holding concerts in China, restricting the broadcast of South Korean TV dramas, forcibly stopping the private performing arts cooperation between the two countries, prohibiting the two countries from cooperating in the field of variety shows, and preventing South Korean private cultural industry companies from investing in China. However, the Chinese authorities denied that they had ever implemented the "Hallyu ban" and said that they had always maintained a positive attitude towards cultural exchanges between the two countries. China believes that cultural exchanges should be based on "public opinion" and claims that the deployment of THAAD (anti-missile system) has also aroused dissatisfaction among the Chinese public, and therefore will show anti-South Korean sentiment.
== Impact == In July 2016, rumors began to circulate about a "ban on Korean entertainment," which was triggered by media reports that Korean stars' performances were not approved after September.<ref>{{Cite web |last=藺思含 |date=2021-09-11 |title=限韓令後又整治飯圈 韓星在中國還「有定企」嗎? |url=https://www.hk01.com/%E4%B8%96%E7%95%8C%E5%B0%88%E9%A1%8C/675036/%E9%99%90%E9%9F%93%E4%BB%A4%E5%BE%8C%E5%8F%88%E6%95%B4%E6%B2%BB%E9%A3%AF%E5%9C%88-%E9%9F%93%E6%98%9F%E5%9C%A8%E4%B8%AD%E5%9C%8B%E9%82%84-%E6%9C%89%E5%AE%9A%E4%BC%81-%E5%97%8E |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230529130830/https://www.hk01.com/%E4%B8%96%E7%95%8C%E5%B0%88%E9%A1%8C/675036/%E9%99%90%E9%9F%93%E4%BB%A4%E5%BE%8C%E5%8F%88%E6%95%B4%E6%B2%BB%E9%A3%AF%E5%9C%88-%E9%9F%93%E6%98%9F%E5%9C%A8%E4%B8%AD%E5%9C%8B%E9%82%84-%E6%9C%89%E5%AE%9A%E4%BC%81-%E5%97%8E |archive-date=2023-05-29 |access-date=2021-12-14 |website=香港01 |language=zh-HK |url-status=live}}</ref><ref name=":0">{{Cite web |last=聯合新聞網 |date=2021-02-24 |title=「限韓令」解除? 央視與KBS簽署合作協議 |url=https://udn.com/news/story/7333/5273027 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230529131210/https://udn.com/news/story/7333/5273027 |archive-date=2023-05-29 |access-date=2021-12-14 |website=聯合新聞網 |language=zh-Hant-TW}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |title=亞洲週刊 |url=https://www.yzzk.com/queue?session&referrer=https://www.yzzk.com/article/details/%E5%B0%81%E9%9D%A2%E5%B0%88%E9%A1%8C/2016-33/1470886823669/%E5%8C%97%E4%BA%AC%E6%82%84%E7%84%B6%E5%95%9F%E5%8B%95%E9%99%90%E9%9F%93%E4%BB%A4%20%E5%8F%8D%E5%88%B6%E8%96%A9%E5%BE%B7%E9%9F%93%E6%B5%81%E6%90%8D%E5%A4%B1%E6%85%98%E9%87%8D |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230529130822/https://www.yzzk.com/queue?session&referrer=https://www.yzzk.com/article/details/%E5%B0%81%E9%9D%A2%E5%B0%88%E9%A1%8C/2016-33/1470886823669/%E5%8C%97%E4%BA%AC%E6%82%84%E7%84%B6%E5%95%9F%E5%8B%95%E9%99%90%E9%9F%93%E4%BB%A4%20%E5%8F%8D%E5%88%B6%E8%96%A9%E5%BE%B7%E9%9F%93%E6%B5%81%E6%90%8D%E5%A4%B1%E6%85%98%E9%87%8D |archive-date=2023-05-29 |access-date=2023-05-29 |website=www.yzzk.com |url-status=live}}</ref> At the same time, Weibo blogger "Weishi Observer" posted a screenshot of what appeared to be an internal notice from Jiangsu Satellite TV prohibiting the broadcast of any advertisements featuring Korean stars.<ref>{{cite news |date=2016-11-23 |title="限韩"不仅针对电视台,全文娱行业均在范围内 这次真的要跟韩国欧巴们说再见 |url=https://wanbao.xyxww.com.cn/html/2016-11/23/content_239180.htm?from=timeline |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20241127094337/https://wanbao.xyxww.com.cn/html/2016-11/23/content_239180.htm?from=timeline |archivedate=2024-11-27 |accessdate=2024-11-27 |work=信阳晚报 |language=zh-hans}}</ref> Hwang Chi-yeul's performance on October 29 was the last performance by a Korean singer in China in 2016.<ref>{{cite news |date=2016-10-03 |title="限韩令"生效,黄致列将是今年最后一位在华演出者 |url=http://m.bljcn.com/cnblj/24682119501.html |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20241127094502/http://m.bljcn.com/cnblj/24682119501.html |archivedate=2024-11-27 |accessdate=2024-11-27 |work=中华必亮剑天天时事 |language=zh-hans}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |title=中国外交部否认"限韩令" |url=http://cnnews.chosun.com/client/news/viw.asp?cate=&mcate=&nNewsNumb=20161146619&nidx= |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20231215051900/http://cnnews.chosun.com/client/news/viw.asp?cate=&mcate=&nNewsNumb=20161146619&nidx= |archive-date=2023-12-15 |access-date=2023-12-15 |website=朝鮮日報中文版 |language= |url-status=live}}</ref>

Even some Korean artists' fan groups were punished by the authorities, with Weibo accounts were banned. Some Korean media strongly criticized this, describing it as seriously affecting cultural exchanges between China and South Korea, and it was simply a second "Hallyu ban". Korean stars' Weibo accounts were not unbanned until December of the same year.<ref>{{Cite web |last=三立新聞網 |date=2021-09-09 |title=中共整頓娛樂圈「掃到韓星!」韓媒怒轟:第二個「限韓令」 {{!}} 娛樂星聞 {{!}} 三立新聞網 SETN.COM |url=https://www.setn.com/News.aspx?NewsID=995116 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230529130830/https://www.setn.com/news.aspx?newsid=995116 |archive-date=2023-05-29 |access-date=2021-12-14 |website=www.setn.com |language=zh-Hant-TW |url-status=live}}</ref>

In May 2023, Korean star Choo Ja-hyun participated in "Sisters Who Make Waves 2023", becoming the first Korean artist to appear on a Chinese mainland program since the ban on Korean entertainment. This was interpreted by some netizens as a further relaxation of the ban on Korean entertainment. Later, Korean stars Jung Yong-hwa and Hyuna were originally scheduled to participate in Chinese mainland variety shows and music festivals, but they were once again strongly condemned and boycotted by anti-Korean netizens and temporarily canceled their participation plans.<ref>{{Cite web |title=鄭容和錄製內地綜藝節目遭舉報或無得播 網友齊呼︰支持限韓令 |date=23 May 2023 |url=https://www.hk01.com/%E5%8D%B3%E6%99%82%E5%A8%9B%E6%A8%82/900953/%E9%84%AD%E5%AE%B9%E5%92%8C%E9%8C%84%E8%A3%BD%E5%85%A7%E5%9C%B0%E7%B6%9C%E8%97%9D%E7%AF%80%E7%9B%AE%E9%81%AD%E8%88%89%E5%A0%B1%E6%88%96%E7%84%A1%E5%BE%97%E6%92%AD-%E7%B6%B2%E5%8F%8B%E9%BD%8A%E5%91%BC-%E6%94%AF%E6%8C%81%E9%99%90%E9%9F%93%E4%BB%A4 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230713115840/https://www.hk01.com/%E5%8D%B3%E6%99%82%E5%A8%9B%E6%A8%82/900953/%E9%84%AD%E5%AE%B9%E5%92%8C%E9%8C%84%E8%A3%BD%E5%85%A7%E5%9C%B0%E7%B6%9C%E8%97%9D%E7%AF%80%E7%9B%AE%E9%81%AD%E8%88%89%E5%A0%B1%E6%88%96%E7%84%A1%E5%BE%97%E6%92%AD-%E7%B6%B2%E5%8F%8B%E9%BD%8A%E5%91%BC-%E6%94%AF%E6%8C%81%E9%99%90%E9%9F%93%E4%BB%A4 |archive-date=2023-07-13 |access-date=2023-11-23 |url-status=live}}</ref>
In February 2025, South Korean media quoted an official from the APEC summit organizing committee in China as saying that China might lift the ban on Korean entertainment as early as May. This was also because China considered that Lee Jae Myung might win the presidential election in 2025 and become the next president of South Korea. In March of the same year, the American film ''Number 17'' directed by South Korean director Bong Joon-ho was released in China. Bong Joon-ho's name and related information were not blocked or deleted, indicating that non-Korean films directed by South Korean directors are not restricted.<ref>{{cite web |author1=刘. 羽. 安. |date=2025-02-20 |title=韩政府就中国或解除"限韩令"消息表态 |url=https://m-cn.yna.co.kr/view/ACK20250220003300881 |accessdate=2025-02-20 |website=韩联社}}</ref> In April, the South Korean (non-foreign Korean) rap group Homies successfully held a performance in Wuhan.
