Halifax Street is one of the intermediate-width streets of the Adelaide grid, at {{convert|1+1/2|ch|lk=in}} wide.
Circa 1844 Halifax Street became the location of one of Adelaide's first breweries, founded by William Henry Clark<ref>{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article158919137 |title=Local Intelligence |newspaper=Adelaide Observer |issue=66 |date=28 September 1844 |access-date=22 May 2017 |page=4 |via=National Library of Australia}}</ref> who later built a flour mill close by. The brewery and mill were sited on city acres 564 and 603 between Halifax and Gilles streets which, from 1909 to 1950, housed Adelaide's rubbish incinerator.<ref>{{cite news |url=http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article208624349 |title=Refuse Destructor |newspaper=Evening Journal |volume=XLII |issue=11544 |location=Adelaide |date=9 March 1908 |access-date=22 May 2017 |page=1 |via=National Library of Australia}}</ref>
