It flows along the eastern boundary of the hydrographic district encompassing Azua, Baní, and San Cristóbal.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://mipais.jmarcano.com/geografia/rios/jaina.html|title=Ríos de la República Dominicana|last=|first=|date=|website=mipais.jmarcano.com|archive-url=|archive-date=|access-date=2018-12-26}}</ref>

In 1496, according to Floyd, "Miguel Diaz and Francisco de Garay, working their way down the Haina river, discovered rich deposits of gold in the river sands perhaps twenty-five miles from the coast." Bartolome Colon built a fort along this river, "well situated within the gold region", which he named San Cristobal.<ref name="Floyd">{{cite book|last1=Floyd|first1=Troy|title=The Columbus Dynasty in the Caribbean, 1492-1526|date=1973|publisher=University of New Mexico Press|location=Albuquerque|pages=32–34, 44}}</ref>

== Overview == Haina River stretches across a length of 86 km. It originates from Loma El Zumbador of Lomas de Maimón in the Central Mountain range, located Northwest of Villa Altagracia. ==Etymology== Julian Granberry and Gary Vescelius suggest a Macoris etymology for the name ''haina'', comparing it with ''ha-ina'' 'many nets' in the purportedly related Warao language of the Orinoco Delta.<ref name="Granberry">{{cite book | title=Languages of the Pre-Columbian Antilles | publisher=University of Alabama Press | author=Granberry, Julian |author2=Gary Vescelius | year=2004 | location=Tuscaloosa, AL | isbn=0-8173-5123-X}}</ref>
