The Hackett River's watershed's land cover is classified as 35.2% conifer forest, 30.5% shrubland, 11.8% mixed forest, 11.6% barren, 5.4% herbaceous, and small amounts of other cover.<ref name=watertool/>

==Geography== The Hackett River originates with several small streams flowing into Kennicott Lake, on the south side of Level Mountain on the Nahlin Plateau.<ref name="Kennicott"/> From its source, near Hyland Ranch,<ref>{{BCGNIS|19421|Hyland Ranch}}</ref> the river flows northwest through the Tahltan Highland for about {{convert|33|km|mi|abbr=on}}.<ref name=length/> It first flows to Hatchau Lake,<ref>{{BCGNIS|8578|Hatchau Lake}}</ref> then through the Salmon Creek 3 Indian reserve,<ref>{{BCGNIS|64819|Salmon Creek 3}}</ref> of the Tahltan First Nation, part of the Tahltan people.<ref>{{cite web |url= https://labrc.com/first-nation/tahltan |title= Tahltan Indian Band |publisher= First Nations Land Management Resource Centre |accessdate= 17 August 2021}}</ref>

Continuing northwest between Level Mountain and Kaketsa Mountain,<ref>{{BCGNIS|2975|Kaketsa Mountain}}</ref> the Hackett River flows through a wetland then through a gorge. Along the way it is joined by Stone Creek,<ref>{{BCGNIS|53137|Stone Creek}}</ref> Copper Creek,<ref>{{BCGNIS|13008}}</ref> Pyrrhotite Creek,<ref>{{BCGNIS|22204}}</ref> and Egnell Creek,<ref>{{BCGNIS|2275|Egnell Creek}}</ref> before joining the Sheslay River.
