Prior to his working at the Bureau of Meteorology, Ayers was Chief of Marine and Atmospheric Research at the CSIRO, where he had worked since 1975.<ref name="monash.edu.au">{{citation|url=http://www.monash.edu.au/alumni/prominent-alumni/greg-ayers.html|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20111124222427/http://monash.edu.au/alumni/prominent-alumni/greg-ayers.html|archivedate=24 November 2011|title=Dr Greg Ayers|publisher=Monash University}}</ref> Ayers is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.
He was educated at Monash University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (with honours) and a PhD.<ref name="monash.edu.au"/>
