It is on the Vorskla river (a tributary of the Dnieper) and the Grayvoronka river. It was known as ''Grayvorony'' until 1838.<ref name='gray-1'/>

===Russo-Ukrainian War=== The area has been the site of several cross border incursions by pro-Ukrainian forces since the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
