==Background== Columbia had rejected the original recording of ''Essex'' and insisted that it be re-recorded to create a more commercial package. The label hired Ian Broudie to produce various tracks for the re-recorded version; one of which was "Getting into Something".<ref>Essex - 2016 deluxe edition CD booklet liner notes</ref> The song was selected as the album's third single. For its release as a single, "Getting into Something" was remixed. The mixing was handled by Dave Bascombe. A "Midnight Mix" of the song was also created by Bay Route.

"Getting into Something" reached number 51 in the UK and remained on the chart for two weeks.<ref name="officialcharts1">{{cite web|url=http://www.officialcharts.com/artist/12673/alison-moyet/ |title=ALISON MOYET | full Official Chart History | Official Charts Company |publisher=Officialcharts.com |access-date=3 November 2017}}</ref> It was released on 12-inch, cassette and CD in the UK and on CD across Europe. A promotional video was filmed for the single, which was directed by Liam & Grant (Liam Kan and Grant Hodgson) for the production company HLA.<ref>{{cite web|author=Published on |url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEguAz7K73s |title=Alison Moyet - Getting Into Something |publisher=YouTube |date=17 November 2012 |access-date=3 November 2017}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=https://imvdb.com/n/liam-grant |title=Liam & Grant |publisher=IMVDb |access-date=3 November 2017}}</ref> During July 1994, the video was listed in ''Billboard'' magazine's The Clip List - a sampling of playlists submitted by national and local music video outlets. The video had received play on the local Boston TV music programme ''Rage'' as well as on the Chicago JBTV WWOR network.<ref>{{cite magazine|url=https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_XQgEAAAAMBAJ |page=[https://archive.org/details/bub_gb_XQgEAAAAMBAJ/page/n36 37] |quote=alison moyet getting into something. |title=Billboard |magazine=Billboard |via=Internet Archive |date=2 July 1994 |access-date=3 November 2017}}</ref>

==Critical reception== Upon its release as a single, Alan Jones of ''Music Week'' wrote, "Saddled with an ordinary song, for which, as co-writer, Moyet must share the blame, it is nonetheless always pleasant to hear her voice. Something a little more challenging would have been preferable, however."<ref>{{cite magazine |first=Alan |last=Jones |url=https://worldradiohistory.com/UK/Music-Week/1994/Music-Week-1994-05-28.pdf |title=Market Preview: Mainstream - Singles |magazine=Music Week |date=28 May 1994 |page=16 |access-date=17 April 2021}}</ref> Pan-European magazine ''Music & Media'' were more favourable, describing it as a "ballad with a demanding dance rhythm" and praising Moyet's vocal performance on the track.<ref>{{cite magazine |date=4 June 1994 |title=New Releases: Singles |magazine=Music & Media}}</ref> Holly Barringer of ''Melody Maker'' noted the song's "swooping movie soundtrack quality" and remarked, "A trippy beat to start with, subsequently smothered in Alison's chocolate vocal wherein boy meets girl, boy and girl argue, fall in love anyway, run towards each other on a beach (arms wide) and smash emotionally into each other with Alison diva-ishly crescendoing away in the background."<ref>{{cite magazine |last=Barringer |first=Holly |title=Singles |date=21 May 1994 |magazine=Melody Maker |page=33}}</ref>

In a review of ''Essex'', ''Hi-Fi News & Record Review'' commented, "Tracks like 'Whispering Your Name' and 'Getting into Something' are cleverly arranged, slickly produced, efficiently played and make good showcases for the Moyet lung-power but, they lack memorable tunes."<ref>{{cite web|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=dzk9AQAAIAAJ&q=alison+moyet+essex |title=Hi-fi News - Google Books |year=1993 |access-date=3 November 2017}}</ref> In a retrospective review of the album, Helena Adams of the music website ''Reflections of Darkness'' commented on the song's "amazing funky entrance that sets up the ambience with [Moyet's] sensuous voice".<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.reflectionsofdarkness.com/artists-a-e-cdreviews-131/17269-cd-review-alison-moyet-essex-deluxe-edition |title=Music Magazine - CD Review: Alison Moyet - Essex (Deluxe Edition) |date=16 March 2017 |publisher=Reflections of Darkness |access-date=3 November 2017}}</ref> ''Attitude'' writer Josh Lee described the song as a "forgotten gem".<ref>{{cite web |url=http://attitude.co.uk/album-review-alison-moyet-alf-raindancing-hoodoo-essex-deluxe-editions/ |title=Album review | Alison Moyet: 'Alf', 'Raindancing', 'Hoodoo' & 'Essex' Deluxe Editions | Attitude Magazine |publisher=Attitude.co.uk |date=25 November 2016 |access-date=3 November 2017 |archive-date=2 April 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170402055452/http://attitude.co.uk/album-review-alison-moyet-alf-raindancing-hoodoo-essex-deluxe-editions/ |url-status=dead }}</ref>
