Challa was born in Amsterdam.<ref name=uva/> He studied chemistry between 1946 and 1953. He worked ten years for the Institute of Cellulose Research of the {{illm|Algemene Kunstzijde Unie|nl|Algemene Kunstzijde Unie}}.<ref name=rug>{{cite web|author= |url=http://www.rug.nl/sciencelinx/nieuws/2017/06/201706131_challa |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170923093350/http://www.rug.nl/sciencelinx/nieuws/2017/06/201706131_challa |title=Hoe grote moleculen de wereld veroverden |language=Dutch |publisher=University of Groningen |date=13 June 2017 |archive-date=23 September 2017}}</ref> Challa obtained his title of doctor in maths and physics on 13 May 1959 under Jan Ketelaar at the University of Amsterdam. His thesis was titled: "Formation of polyethylene terephthalate by ester interchange : equilibria kinetics and molecular weight distribution".<ref name=uva/> After starting as professor at the University of Groningen he set the possibility to study polymer chemistry. Challa also developed the research department.<ref name=rug/>
