==Life and work== Gene Dunlap was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, and he began playing drums as a high school student.<ref name=DJF/><ref name="Allmusic">{{cite web |last1=Ruhlmann|first1=William|title=Artist Biography|url=https://www.allmusic.com/artist/gene-dunlap-mn0000194672/biography|website=AllMusic|access-date=27 January 2022}}</ref> He joined the guitarist Earl Klugh as a drummer. In later years, he also performed with Roy Ayers, who played the vibraphone, and guitarist Grant Green.<ref name="Allmusic"/>
