==History== The hospital, which was designed by Thomas Worthington and John Augustus Cory using a Corridor Plan layout, opened as the Cumberland and Westmorland Lunatic Asylum in January 1862.<ref name=county>{{cite web|url=https://www.countyasylums.co.uk/garlands-carleton-carlisle/|title=Garlands Hospital|publisher=County Asylums|accessdate=12 April 2019}}</ref> The building was implemented by John Augustus Cory, surveyor to the county of Cumberland.<ref name=county/> It joined the National Health Service as Garlands Hospital in 1948.<ref name=county/> Concerns were raised in Parliament about the amount of overcrowding in the hospital in 1955.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.theyworkforyou.com/debates/?id=1955-05-02a.1334.8|title=Garlands Hospital, Carlisle (Accommodation)|publisher=Hansard|date=2 May 1955|accessdate=12 April 2019}}</ref>
