James was contracted on to the Essex CCC Academy and throughout that time made his List A debut for the Essex Cricket Board against the Surrey Cricket Board in the 2nd round of the 2003 Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy which was held in 2002. In 2004, James made his first-class debut for CUCCE against Warwickshire. From 2004 to 2007, he represented the university in 9 first-class matches, the last of which came against Essex. During the 2005/06 Sri Lankan cricket season, James played first-class matches for Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club. His debut for the club came against Badureliya Sports Club.
