The pass is located in the Boulder Mountains, in the northwest corner of Blaine County, within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area of the Sawtooth National Forest.

The summit is on State Highway 75, the ''Sawtooth Scenic Byway,''<ref>[http://www.idahobyways.gov/byways/sawtooth.aspx Idaho Byways - Sawtooth Scenic Byway] {{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090627084716/http://www.idahobyways.gov/byways/sawtooth.aspx |date=June 27, 2009 }}</ref> and is {{convert|29|mi}} northwest of Ketchum and the Sun Valley ski resort. It is the highest summit of a highway in the Northwest. Prior to 1977, Highway 75 was designated U.S. Route 93,<ref name=threebr>{{cite news |url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=R9BXAAAAIBAJ&sjid=1vQDAAAAIBAJ&pg=5992%2C2961662 |newspaper=Spokane Daily Chronicle |title=The "Three Brothers" of the Sawtooths |date=July 13, 1931 |page=16}}</ref><ref name=rmcnmoi>{{cite web |url=http://www.davidrumsey.com/maps920003-23818.html |publisher=David Rumsey map collection |agency=Rand McNally Co. |title=Road map of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming |date=1937 |accessdate=October 12, 2014}}</ref><ref name=shmoi>{{cite news |url=http://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~212065~5500205:Shell-Highway-Map-of-Idaho--8-DD-19 |publisher=David Rumsey map collection |agency=Shell Oil Company |title=Highway map of Idaho |date=1956 |accessdate=October 12, 2014}}</ref> which is now to the east on the former U.S. 93 alternate, through Arco and the Lost River Valley.

Galena Summit marks the divide between the Big Wood River and Salmon River drainage areas. A little more than {{convert|1|mi|spell=in}} west of the summit is Galena Overlook, a scenic viewpoint at {{convert|8400|ft|-1}}. It offers views of the Sawtooth range to the northwest and the headwaters of the Salmon River in the Stanley Basin of Custer County, which Highway 75 follows north to Obsidian and Stanley, then east and north towards Challis. The overlook facilities were originally opened in 1964, renamed in 2006 for Frank and Bethine Church,<ref name=scdedcf>{{cite news |url=http://www.mtexpress.com/index2.php?ID=2005111606#.VDrzdSx0yM8 |newspaper=Idaho Mountain Express |location=Ketchum |last=Stahl |first=Greg |title=Scenic overlook dedicated to Church family |date=August 2, 2006 |accessdate=October 12, 2014 |archive-date=October 16, 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141016031058/http://www.mtexpress.com/index2.php?ID=2005111606#.VDrzdSx0yM8 |url-status=dead }}</ref> and renovated in 2010.<ref name=govncom>{{cite news |url=http://www.mtexpress.com/index2.php?ID=2005132738#.VDrzsyx0yM8 |newspaper=Idaho Mountain Express |location=Ketchum |last=Wutz |first=Katherine |title=Galena overlook nears completion |date=August 13, 2010 |accessdate=October 12, 2014 |archive-date=October 16, 2014 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20141016031230/http://www.mtexpress.com/index2.php?ID=2005132738#.VDrzsyx0yM8 |url-status=dead }}</ref>
