Langbein was born on 15 March 1891 in [[Nelson, New Zealand|Nelson]], the son of Frederick John Langbein, a commercial traveller and farmer, and his wife, Mary Ross.<ref name="DNZB Langbein">{{DNZB|last=Aspden|first=Rob|id=5l4|title=Fritz Langbein|accessdate=23 April 2017}}</ref> He was educated at [[Nelson College]] from 1904 to 1908.<ref name="NCOB register">''Nelson College Old Boys' Register, 1856–2006'', 6th edition</ref> During [[World War I]], Langbein served with the [[New Zealand Tunnelling Company]] of the [[New Zealand Expeditionary Force]] on the [[Western Front (World War I)|Western Front]] in France.<ref name="DNZB Langbein" />
