==History== [[File:Friendly Hall and the Pioneer statue, circa 1958.png|thumb|Friendly Hall with ''The Pioneer'' statue in the foreground, {{Circa|1958}}]] The building was designed in a Jacobean style by the renowned Portland architectural firm Whidden & Lewis,<ref name="arch1"/> who devised many of the most significant buildings in Portland, including Portland City Hall.<ref>{{cite book|last=Ritz|first=Richard|title=Architects of Oregon: A Biographical Dictionary of Architects Deceased - 19th and 20th Centuries|year=2002|publisher=Lair Hill|location=Portland, OR|isbn=9780972620024|page=416}}</ref> Completed in 1893, the building was intended to be co-ed housing for the students at the school with separate entrances for men in the north and women in the south, and a communal dining area in the center. This idea only lasted for one year before it was converted to a fully male dormitory.<ref>{{cite book|last=Flowers|first=Jeffery Jane|title=Pioneers, Scholars & Rogues: A Spirited History of the University of Oregon|year=2002|publisher=University of Oregon Press|location=Eugene, OR|isbn=9780871143006|page=15}}</ref> The building continued to be used in this fashion until 1928, when Straub Hall opened as the new dorm and it was then converted into office space.<ref name="arch1"/> The building was renovated in 1914, 1920, 1933, 1957, and 1961, when 27 new rooms were added.<ref name="arch1"/><ref>{{cite news|title=Board Ok's Plan to Add 27 Offices|newspaper=Eugene Register Guard|date=Feb 3, 1961}}</ref> It is currently used as offices for the Department of Romance Languages.
