==Sporting career==

According to census records, Patton was born in Bombay in 1851.

Patton was captain of the Eton Field Game XI in 1868.<ref>{{cite book |last1=Pawson |first1=John |title=The Field Game |date=1922 |publisher=Spottiswoode}}</ref> He went up to Balliol College in 1870 and played for Oxford University Etonians in Field Game matches against their Cambridge University counterparts in 1870<ref>{{cite journal |title=Report |journal=Sportsman |date=1 December 1870 |page=4}}</ref> and 1871, scoring the only two goals in the latter game.<ref>{{cite journal |title=Report |journal=Sportsman |date=2 December 1871 |page=4}}</ref>
