Temple was the grandson of Frederick Temple and the nephew of William Temple, both Archbishops of Canterbury.<ref>”Who's Who 1992 “(London, A & C Black {{ISBN|0-7136-3514-2}})</ref> He was educated at Rugby School and Balliol College, Oxford. He was ordained in 1948<ref>“Crockford's clerical directory, 1995” (Lambeth, Church House {{ISBN|0-7151-8088-6}})</ref> and was a curate in Newark and later Rector of St Agnes' Longsight<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://www.stagneslongsight.org/home.html |title=Church website |access-date=2008-12-30 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080509142652/http://www.stagneslongsight.org/home.html |archive-date=2008-05-09 |url-status=dead }}</ref> and Dean of Hong Kong.
