He comes from a sporting family background; his father Peter won a gold medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in handball, and his mother Christina, also a handball player, won the silver at the 1976 Summer Olympics and bronze at the 1980 Games.<ref>{{cite news|url=https://www.ndr.de/sport/fussball/Frank-Rost-Immer-unbequem-oft-unbezwingbar,rost123.html|title=Frank Rost: Immer unbequem - oft unbezwingbar|date=29 February 2012|access-date=31 March 2025|publisher=NDR|language=de}}</ref>

==Club career== ===Early career and Werder Bremen=== Born in Karl-Marx-Stadt, Rost started his career at 1. FC Markkleeberg in the third German level.<ref>{{Cite web | url = https://www.rsssf.org/players/rostdata.html | title = Frank Rost – Matches and Goals in Bundesliga | first = Matthias | last = Arnhold | date = 31 May 2012 | access-date = 31 May 2012 | publisher = Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation}}</ref>

His play with Markkleeberg led to interest from Werder Bremen who signed Rost in 1992. After playing with Werder Bremen II Rost made his Bundesliga debut during the 1995–96 season and became first-choice keeper during the 1998–99 season. At the end of this season he helped Bremen win the 1998–99 DFB-Pokal. The final against Bayern Munich went to penalties and Rost scored a penalty himself before saving from Lothar Matthäus to win Bremen the cup.<ref>{{cite web | url = https://www.kicker.de/bayern-gegen-bremen-1999-dfb-pokal-503038/analyse |title=Werder Bremen ist DFB-Pokalsieger | website = Kicker | language = de | date = 13 June 1999 | access-date = 28 November 2019}}</ref>

Rost was the second goalkeeper (after Jens Lehmann) to score from open play in the Bundesliga, when he scored on 31 March 2002 against Hansa Rostock. His goal was one of two goals Werder Bremen scored in the last minutes of the match to complete a comeback from a 3–1 deficit and win 4–3.<ref>{{cite web |title=Germany round-up: Köln deny Schalke |url=https://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/news/newsid=20622.html |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20130519005127/http://www.uefa.com/memberassociations/news/newsid=20622.html |url-status=dead |archive-date=19 May 2013 |website=UEFA |access-date=31 March 2020 |date=31 March 2002}}</ref><ref>{{cite news |last1=Stralau |first1=Mark |title=Keeper kippt Spiel |url=https://www.neues-deutschland.de/artikel/15079.keeper-kippt-spiel.html |access-date=31 March 2020 |work=Neues Deutschland |date=2 April 2002 |language=de}}</ref> At the end of the 2001–02 season the club finished in sixth place and qualified for the UEFA Cup.
