Colborne was commissioned into the 15th Regiment of Foot in 1836.<ref name=odnb>{{cite ODNB|url=http://www.oxforddnb.com/view/article/5835/71703|title=Sir Francis Colborne |year=2004 |doi=10.1093/ref:odnb/71703 |access-date=7 July 2019}}</ref> He served in the Crimean War in 1855.<ref name=odnb/>
He was appointed Commander of British Troops in China, Hong Kong and the Straits Settlements in 1874.<ref name=odnb/> He commanded the Perak Expedition in 1875 and quickly put down the insurrection taking place in North West Malaysia.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.1902encyclopedia.com/S/STR/straits-settlements.html |title=Strait Settlements|publisher=1902 Encyclopedia|access-date=7 July 2019}}</ref> He was made a full general on 1 April 1882 and retired in 1883.<ref name=odnb/>
