Because of the sensitive instruments for detecting local leaks of radioactivity, the nuclear power plant was the first place outside the Soviet Union where signs of the Chernobyl accident were detected on April 27, 1986.<ref>{{Cite web |date=2014-05-15 |title=Forsmark: how Sweden alerted the world about the danger of the Chernobyl disaster |url=https://www.europarl.europa.eu/topics/en/article/20140514STO47018/forsmark-how-sweden-alerted-the-world-about-the-danger-of-chernobyl-disaster |access-date=2024-02-23 |website=Topics {{!}} European Parliament |language=en}}</ref> When workers at the plant were found to carry radioactive particles, the origin of the leak was investigated and it eventually became clear that the contamination came from the atmosphere rather than from the Forsmark plant itself.
