==General== thumb|left|View of a small fjord in Flatanger Flatanger was established as a municipality in the old Nord-Trøndelag county on 1 January 1871 when it was separated from the large Fosnes Municipality. Initially, Flatanger Municipality had 1,472 residents. It is one of the few municipalities in Norway whose boundaries have not changed since it was established.<ref name="Dag">{{Cite web |last=Jukvam |first=Dag |year=1999 |title=Historisk oversikt over endringer i kommune- og fylkesinndelingen |url=https://www.ssb.no/emner/00/90/rapp_9913/rapp_9913.pdf |publisher=Statistisk sentralbyrå |language=no |isbn=9788253746845}}</ref> In 2018, it became part of the newly created Trøndelag county.
===Name=== The municipality is likely named after one of the local fjords ({{langx|non|Flat(r)angr}}), but it is not known exactly which one. The first element is {{lang|non|{{linktext|flatr}}}} which means "flat" or "shallow". The last element is {{lang|non|{{linktext|angr}}}} which means "fjord or inlet".<ref name="snl">{{Cite web |last=Store norske leksikon |author-link=Store norske leksikon |title=Flatanger |url=https://snl.no/Flatanger |access-date=2011-08-18 |language=no}}</ref><ref>{{Cite book |last=Rygh |first=Oluf |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=_kFFxvxaufcC |title=Norske gaardnavne: Nordre Trondhjems amt |date=1903 |publisher=W. ===Coat of arms=== The coat of arms was granted on 12 October 1990. The official blazon is ''"Vert, three chevronels embowed argent"'' ({{langx|no|I grønt tre innbøyde sølv sparrer}}). This means the arms have a green field (background) and the charge is three chevrons with a slight curve to them. The charge has a tincture of argent which means it is commonly colored white, but if it is made out of metal, then silver is used. The green color was chosen to represent the agriculture industry in the municipality. The design was chosen to represent the bow of a boat, seen from the front, since boats have a great historical significance in this coastal fishing community. The arms were designed by Even Jarl Skoglund.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Civic heraldry of Norway - Norske Kommunevåpen |url=https://www.heraldry-wiki.com/heraldrywiki/index.php?title=Flatanger |access-date=2023-02-06 |publisher=Heraldry of the World}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |title=Flatanger, Nord-Trøndelag (Norway) |url=https://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/no-17-49.html |access-date=2023-02-06 |website=Flags of the World}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |date=1990-12-09 |title=Godkjenning av våpen og flagg |url=https://lovdata.no/dokument/LF/forskrift/1990-10-12-826 |access-date=2023-02-06 |website=Lovdata.no |publisher=Norges kommunal- og arbeidsdepartementet |language=no}}</ref>
