It was created on {{start date and age|1925|06|25|p=y}} for the newspaper proprietor and philanthropist Sir John Ritchie Findlay.<ref>{{London Gazette |issue=33063 |date=3 July 1925 |page=4449}}</ref> He was the eldest son of John Ritchie Findlay. He was succeeded by his eldest son, the second Baronet. He sat as member of parliament for Banffshire. On his death the title passed to his younger brother, the third Baronet. The title became extinct on the latter's death in {{end date and age|1979|p=y}}.
