== Production == Surya met her future husband and collaborator Rama Adi while working as an assistant director on Rako Prijanto's 2007 films ''D'Bijis'' and ''Love Is Red''.<ref name=":1">{{Cite web|title=Ketika Mouly Surya Bicara Tentang Filmnya dan Kemungkinan Gabung BCU - YouTube|url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kHQb6TCzJM|access-date=2021-02-01|website=www.youtube.com|date=7 January 2020}}</ref><ref name=":2">{{Cite web|last=Djaya|first=Andi Baso|title=Pasutri sehati dalam film|url=https://lokadata.id/artikel/pasutri-sehati-dalam-film|access-date=2021-02-01|website=Lokadata.ID|language=id|archive-date=2021-04-09|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210409090240/https://lokadata.id/artikel/pasutri-sehati-dalam-film|url-status=dead}}</ref> In 2007, they co-founded the film production company Cinesurya and secured funding to produce ''Fiksi.'', based on a screenplay developed by Surya.<ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2" />

The pair sought advice from established filmmaker Riri Riza on producing their first feature film. He recommended collaborating with more experienced practitioners during the development process, which led them to work with producer Tia Hasibuan and writer-director Joko Anwar.<ref name=":1" /> Anwar spent approximately one month revising Surya's draft and was subsequently credited as a co-writer.<ref name=":1" />

In March 2020, a behind-the-scenes film directed by then lesser-known filmmakers Yosep Anggi Noen and B. W. Purbanegara was released on Cinesurya's YouTube channel.<ref>{{Cite web|title=fiksi. == Reception == Film critic Eric Sasono wrote that Surya's direction "almost fails to deliver" because of what he described as a lack of plausibility in the story, but he also praised the film for venturing "out of the comfort zone" of mainstream Indonesian cinema.<ref name=":3" /> Similarly, Maggie Lee of ''The Hollywood Reporter'' criticised the film's "jumbled" time sequences and laid-back pacing, while praising its "overlapping plots", which she described as "weirdly fascinating in their own right".<ref>{{Cite web|date=2008-10-07|title=Film Review: Fiksi|url=https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/film-review-fiksi-120567|access-date=2021-02-06|website=The Hollywood Reporter|language=en}}</ref>

Richard Kuipers of ''Variety'' offered a more positive assessment, describing the film as "an intriguing web around a lonely rich girl's obsession with a handsome writer" and praising Surya's direction as "briskly paced" with "well-drawn characters".<ref>{{Cite web|last=Kuipers|first=Richard|date=2008-10-15|title=Fiksi|url=https://variety.com/2008/film/reviews/fiksi-1200471618/|access-date=2021-02-06|website=Variety|language=en-US}}</ref>
