The conservation park consists of land in section 687 (formerly part section 289) of the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Adelaide. It is bounded by St Peter's Collegiate Girls' School to the north-west, a private residence to the east, and by the following roads: Stonyfell Road to the north-east, Marble Terrace to the south and Hallett Road to the west.<ref name="LMV"/><ref name="SAGG-1976">{{cite web |last1=Banfield |first1=D.H. |title=NATIONAL PARKS AND WILDLIFE ACT, 1972-1974: FERGUSON RECREATION PARK ABOLISHED AND FERGUSON CONSERVATION PARK CONSTITUTED |url= http://www9.austlii.edu.au/au/other/sa_gazette/1976/27/3168.pdf |website=The South Australian Government Gazette |publisher=South Australian Government |access-date=31 May 2018 |page=3168 |date=24 June 1976}}</ref><ref name=MP/>{{rp|1 & 4}}

The land which is occupied by the conservation park was originally donated to the Government of South Australia on 24 June 1949 by its previous owner, Alice Effie Ferguson, with the request that it be dedicated as a national pleasure resort “for the benefit of the public in perpetuity”. The national pleasure resort was managed by the South Australian Government Tourist Bureau until 27 April 1972 when the land was re-dedicated under the ''National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972'' as the ''Ferguson Recreation Park''.<ref name=donation/><ref name=MP/>{{rp| 16 & 21}}<ref name=NPWact>{{cite journal |title= No. 56 of 1972 (National Parks and Wildlife Act, 1972) |journal= The South Australian Government Gazette|date= 27 April 1972|pages= 660 & 704|url= http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/sa/num_act/npawa56o1972293/ |access-date= 10 November 2018 |publisher= Government of South Australia}}</ref> The recreation park was abolished on 24 June 1976 and then re-constituted as a conservation park, with the latter being dedicated on 2 June 1977 following the discovery of a procedural error.<ref name=MP/>{{rp|21}}<ref name="SAG-1977">{{cite web |last1=Hopgood |first1=D.J. |title=NATIONAL PARKS AND WILDLIFE ACT, 1972-1974: CONSERVATION PARK CONSTITUTED |url=http://www8.austlii.edu.au/au/other/sa_gazette/1977/24/1580.pdf |website=The South Australian Government Gazette |publisher=Government of South Australia |access-date=10 November 2018 |page=1580 |date=2 June 1977}}</ref> The land was part of a larger holding of which the remainder is now occupied by St Peter's Collegiate Girls' School.<ref name=MP/>{{rp|iii, 1, 4}}
