Mahl was born in Tartu, in the Governorate of Livonia of the Russian Empire (now Estonia),<ref name="Obit">{{cite news |title=Evald Mahl |url=https://www.newspapers.com/clip/120485046/evald-mahl-1915-2001/ |work=The Des Moines Register |date=January 20, 2001 |location=Des Moines, IA |page=17 |access-date=March 9, 2023 |via=Newspapers.com}} {{Open access}}</ref> the son of Peeter and Pauline (née Martin) Mahl.<ref>{{cite news |title=Helmi E. He was the 1934, 1936, 1937, and 1944 Estonian national basketball champion. He also competed in volleyball at the 1934 Estonian Masters and competed in baseball and athletics. During World War II, he fled Estonia for Germany. Mahl later moved to Canada before settling in the United States.
