It arose in 1998 as a merger and continuation of ''Acta Physica Hungarica'', ''Anales de Física'', ''Czechoslovak Journal of Physics'', ''Il Nuovo Cimento'', ''Journal de Physique'', ''Portugaliae Physica'' and ''Zeitschrift für Physik''. The journal is published in various sections, covering all areas of physics.

==History== In the late 1990s, Springer and EDP Sciences decided to merge ''Zeitschrift für Physik'' and ''Journal de Physique''. With the addition of ''Il Nuovo Cimento'' from the Societa Italiana di Fisica, the ''European Physical Journal'' commenced publication in January 1998. Now ''EPJ'' is a merger and continuation of ''Acta Physica Hungarica'', ''Anales de Fisica'', ''Czechoslovak Journal of Physics'', ''Il Nuovo Cimento'', ''Journal de Physique'', ''Portugaliae Physica'' and ''Zeitschrift für Physik''.

The short-lived open-access journal family PhysMath Central<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.physmathcentral.com/ |title=PhysMath Central |publisher=PhysMath Central |access-date=2012-08-28}}</ref> was merged in 2011 into the ''European Physical Journal'',<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.epj.org/ |title=European Physical Journal (EPJ) |publisher=EDP Sciences, the Società Italiana di Fisica, and Springer |access-date=2018-10-23}}</ref> which has offered an open-access option since 2006.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.epj.org/open_access.html |title=European Physical Journal – Open Access Publishing in the European Physical Journal |publisher=EPJ |access-date=2012-08-28 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120911085807/http://www.epj.org/open_access.html |archive-date=2012-09-11 }}</ref>

== Controversies == In 2023, editors retracted a journal article published in 2022 in ''European Physical Journal Plus'' that claimed that did not deny climate change but discussed other possible origins for our changing climate.<ref>{{Cite journal |last=Alimonti |first=Gianluca |last2=Mariani |first2=Luigi |last3=Prodi |first3=Franco |last4=Ricci |first4=Renato Angelo |date=2023-08-23 |title=Retraction Note: A critical assessment of extreme events trends in times of global warming |url=https://doi.org/10.1140/epjp/s13360-023-04386-3 |journal=The European Physical Journal Plus |language=en |volume=138 |issue=8 |pages=743 |doi=10.1140/epjp/s13360-023-04386-3 |issn=2190-5444|doi-access=free }}</ref><ref name=":0">{{Cite news |last=Readfearn |first=Graham |date=2023-08-25 |title=Scientific journal retracts article that claimed no evidence of climate crisis |language=en-GB |work=The Guardian |url=https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/aug/26/scientific-journal-retracts-article-that-claimed-no-evidence-of-climate-crisis |access-date=2023-08-27 |issn=0261-3077}}</ref>

The article was widely shared with article metrics showing that the article was in the 99th percentile (ranked 293rd) of the 512,033 tracked articles of a similar age in all journals, and in the 99th percentile (ranked 1st) of the 41 tracked articles of a similar age in ''European Physical Journal Plus''.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Altmetric – RETRACTED ARTICLE: A critical assessment of extreme events trends in times of global warming |url=https://link.altmetric.com/details/121693729 |access-date=2023-08-27 |website=link.altmetric.com}}</ref> The article was cited by climate change denialists and in two segments on Sky News Australia (known for climate science misinformation).<ref name=":0" />

The retraction note does not highlight any error, data or image falsification, plagiarism or other reasons that usually justify a retraction: for a reconstruction of what happened, see<ref>{{Cite web |last=Jr |first=Roger Pielke |date=2023-07-17 |title="Think of the Implications of Publishing" |url=https://rogerpielkejr.substack.com/p/think-of-the-implications-of-publishing |access-date=2024-03-06 |website=The Honest Broker}}</ref> and<ref>{{Cite web |last=Jr |first=Roger Pielke |date=2023-08-26 |title=The Alimonti Addendum |url=https://rogerpielkejr.substack.com/p/the-alimonti-addendum |access-date=2024-03-06 |website=The Honest Broker}}</ref> where also the reviewers notes can be found.
