==History== The hospital was built around almshouses for six poor males endowed by Sir John Port in 1556.<ref name=etwall>{{cite web|title=Etwall’s Historical Background|url=http://www.etwallhistory.org/html/general.htm|publisher=Etwall and Burnaston Local History Society|accessdate=11 April 2014}}</ref> The number of poor males which could be accommodated was increased to twelve in 1622.<ref name=etwall/> The 'Hospital' was run as a charity by a corporation and a resident Master.<ref name=etwall/> The modern hospital, which started life as an isolation unit in 1902, was by 1949 in use as a rehabilitation centre. By 1979, it was catering for the young chronic sick and geriatric patients and the terminally ill, as well as those recovering from accidents and serious operations run by Derbyshire Area Health Authority.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://api.parliament.uk/historic-hansard/commons/1979/dec/19/etwall-hospital-derbyshire|title=Etwall Hospital, Derbyshire|publisher=Hansard|date=19 December 1979|accessdate=27 September 2018}}</ref>
The decision to close the hospital was resisted by the Etwall Community Action Group and was supported by the staff who led a work-in until March 1980.<ref>{{cite news|title=Campaign delayed closure of hospital they all loved|url=http://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/Campaign-delayed-closure-hospital-loved/story-11606817-detail/story.html|accessdate=11 April 2014|newspaper=Derby Telegraph|date=22 December 2009|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140413124023/http://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/Campaign-delayed-closure-hospital-loved/story-11606817-detail/story.html|archive-date=13 April 2014|url-status=dead}}</ref>
