He played his club rugby for Leicester Tigers and Oxford University.

He made his debut on 19 January 1935 against {{nrut|Wales}} at Twickenham in a 3–3 draw.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://en.espn.co.uk/statsguru/rugby/match/19496.html|title=England 3 - 3 Wales (FT)|publisher=ESPNscrum|accessdate=6 December 2017}}</ref> Nicholson featured in all three games of the 1935 Home Nations Championship, also featuring as England beat {{nrut|Ireland}} and lost to {{nrut|Scotland}}.

Nicholson played 8 games for Leicester Tigers in the 1935–36 season. His debut was 5 October 1935, in a loss against Coventry and his final game was on 11 January 1936 in a 16–6 loss to Gloucester.<ref name="Tigers stats">{{cite book|last1=Farmer|first1=Stuart|last2=Hands|first2=David|title=Tigers - Official history of Leicester Football Club|publisher=The Rugby DevelopmentFoundation|isbn=978-0-9930213-0-5|pages=112}}</ref> His final England game was against {{nrut|Wales}} on 18 January 1936 in a 0-0 draw as part of the 1936 Home Nations Championship.
