He played his club rugby for Leicester Tigers and Oxford University.
He made his debut on 19 January 1935 against {{nrut|Wales}} at Twickenham in a 3–3 draw.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://en.espn.co.uk/statsguru/rugby/match/19496.html|title=England 3 - 3 Wales (FT)|publisher=ESPNscrum|accessdate=6 December 2017}}</ref> Nicholson featured in all three games of the 1935 Home Nations Championship, also featuring as England beat {{nrut|Ireland}} and lost to {{nrut|Scotland}}.
Nicholson played 8 games for Leicester Tigers in the 1935–36 season.
