In the round-of-16 match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup against rivals Germany, Lampard had a first-half shot at goal that bounced off the crossbar and from TV replays was clearly seen to cross the goal line. If counted, it would have tied the game 2–2. However, neither the referee nor the linesman saw it as a goal, and play was continued. In the second-half, Lampard hit the cross-bar again, with a 30-yard free-kick. The final score was a 4–1 win for Germany, eliminating England from the tournament.<ref>{{cite news |last=Garside |first=Kevin |date=27 June 2010 |title=England v Germany: Frank Lampard's disallowed goal highlights stupidity of Fifa |work=The Daily Telegraph |location=London |url=https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/world-cup-2010/teams/england/7857382/England-v-Germany-Frank-Lampards-disallowed-goal-highlights-stupidity-of-Fifas-ruling.html |url-status=dead |access-date=3 April 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100630074608/http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/world-cup-2010/teams/england/7857382/England-v-Germany-Frank-Lampards-disallowed-goal-highlights-stupidity-of-Fifas-ruling.html |archive-date=30 June 2010}}</ref>

In the following season, Chelsea made five major acquisitions in the summer transfer window in Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz and Édouard Mendy. Chelsea initially started strongly, topping their Champions League group and the Premier League in early December. However, after a run of two wins in eight Premier League matches, Chelsea dropped to ninth and Lampard was dismissed as manager on 25 January 2021. He remained on Chelsea's payroll to see out his contract, "pocketing £75,000" per week in compensation.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Wells |first=Darren |date=2021-02-14 |title=Frank Lampard 'still pocketing £75,000-a-week' from Chelsea after being sacked |url=https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/chelsea-frank-lampard-sacking-compensation-23498437 |access-date=2023-01-15 |website=mirror |language=en |archive-date=15 January 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230115015249/https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/chelsea-frank-lampard-sacking-compensation-23498437 |url-status=live }}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |date=25 January 2021 |title=Statement on Frank Lampard |url=https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2021/01/25/statement-on-frank-lampard |access-date=25 January 2021 |publisher=Chelsea FC |archive-date=25 January 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210125210537/https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2021/01/25/statement-on-frank-lampard |url-status=live }}</ref> His dismissal came just 24 hours after Chelsea's 3–1 win over Luton Town in the FA Cup.<ref>{{cite news |date=25 January 2020 |title=Chelsea Sack Lampard |work=footballexpress.in |url=https://footballexpress.in/chelsea-sacked-manager-frank-lampard-after-fa-cup-victory/ |access-date=25 January 2021 |archive-date=22 April 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210422012049/https://footballexpress.in/chelsea-sacked-manager-frank-lampard-after-fa-cup-victory/ |url-status=live }}</ref> On 26 January, German coach Thomas Tuchel was announced as his replacement.<ref>{{Cite web |title=Tuchel joins Chelsea |url=https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2021/01/26/tuchel-joins-chelsea?cardIndex=0-0 |access-date=29 January 2021 |website=ChelseaFC |archive-date=29 January 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210129141910/https://www.chelseafc.com/en/news/2021/01/26/tuchel-joins-chelsea?cardIndex=0-0 |url-status=live }}</ref>

Lampard has had a troubled relationship with his boyhood club West Ham United where he was seen by some fans as a product of nepotism. He claims that he often received negative taunts about his weight, and that during a match as an 18-year-old when he broke his leg in play, he heard cheers from fans. Following his transfer to Chelsea, Lampard turned against his former club and has since stated: "I remember when Joe Cole first came to Chelsea he would turn away in disappointment if West Ham lost. I would smile. That's how deeply I felt. I wanted West Ham to lose. Now I don't even look for their results."<ref>{{Cite web |title=Lampard hits out at Hammers |url=https://www.skysports.com/football/news/2385820/lampard-hits-out-at-hammers |access-date=2023-04-19 |website=Sky Sports |language=en |archive-date=19 April 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230419171439/https://www.skysports.com/football/news/2385820/lampard-hits-out-at-hammers |url-status=live }}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |date=2020-12-21 |title=Taunts of 'Fat Frank', smiling when West Ham lost: Why Hammers still hate Lampard |url=https://talksport.com/football/807221/fat-frank-nepotism-west-ham-hammers-hate-chelsea-lampard/ |access-date=2023-04-19 |website=talkSPORT |language=en-US |archive-date=19 April 2023 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230419171442/https://talksport.com/football/807221/fat-frank-nepotism-west-ham-hammers-hate-chelsea-lampard/ |url-status=live }}</ref> Later in his career, Lampard adopted a more mature attitude towards his former club saying that he had complete respect for the club and thanking Harry Redknapp and Tony Carr for the influence at the start of his career.<ref name="Hammers News 2022">{{cite web | title='I'll never forget' Frank Lampard's classy message of thanks to West Ham | website=Hammers News | date=17 September 2022 | url=https://www.hammers.news/club-news/ill-never-forget-everton-boss-frank-lampards-classy-message-of-thanks-to-west-ham-is-it-time-to-bury-the-hatchet/ | access-date=20 April 2023 | archive-date=20 April 2023 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20230420060847/https://www.hammers.news/club-news/ill-never-forget-everton-boss-frank-lampards-classy-message-of-thanks-to-west-ham-is-it-time-to-bury-the-hatchet/ | url-status=live }}</ref>
