Born in the parish of Kilmore, County Cavan, Ireland on 3 April 1847, he was educated at St Patrick's College, Cavan and St Patrick's College, Maynooth.<ref>{{cite book | last=Canning | first= Bernard| author-link= | title= Bishops of Ireland 1870-1987| location= Ballyshannon | publisher= Donegal Democrat| pages=138| year=1988 | isbn= 1870963008}}</ref> He was ordained to the priesthood in circa 1870.<ref name=bmgen>{{Catholic-hierarchy|bishop|bmgen|Bishop Edward MacGennis|3 November 2013}}</ref> MacGennis was the parish priest of Drumlane from 1886 to 1888.
