He was elected at the 1832 general election as one of the two Members of Parliament (MPs) for the newly enfranchised borough of Greenwich.<ref name=gents>{{cite book|title=The Gentleman's Magazine - Volume 36|year=1851|publisher=John Bowyers, Nichol & Company|location=London|page=543|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=vrkUAAAAQAAJ&q=barnard+bought+gosfield&pg=PA543|editor=Sylvanus Urban}}</ref><ref name="craig1832-1885">{{cite book |last=Craig |first=F.
