Bannerman was born in the parish of Old Machar, Aberdeen, to Patrick Bannerman and Anna Maria Johnston.<ref name="birth">''Scotland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1564–1950''</ref> He was educated, in England, at Clifton College, then at Edinburgh Academy.<ref name=sc>{{cite book|last=Percival|first=Tony|title=Shropshire Cricketers 1844-1998|year=1999|publisher=A.C.S. He was capped for {{nrut|Scotland}} between 1872 and 1873.<ref name=Bath1/> He also played for Edinburgh Academicals.<ref name=Bath1/>

He also played for the Scotland national cricket team,<ref name=Bath1/> as well as at county level in England for Shropshire between 1876 and 1881 while playing at club level for Wales-based Knighton.<ref name=sc/>

In 1916, his eldest son, Pte.
