Born in London, Avory was educated at Stowe School.<ref>{{cite web |title=International Honours |url=https://www.stowe.co.uk/school/sport/international-honours |website=Stowe |publisher=Stowe School |access-date=1 February 2023}}</ref> He was a great-nephew of High Court judge Sir Horace Avory.
