He was educated at Rugby School<ref>“Who was Who” 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 {{ISBN|0-7136-3457-X}}</ref> and New College, Oxford.<ref>The Times, Friday, 11 February 1870; p. 3; Issue 26671; col E University Intelligence</ref> After graduation, he was an Assistant Master at Winchester College for ten years before becoming Vicar of North Bradley in Wiltshire.
