The son of the rector of Brisley, Edward Ash was educated at Rugby School and at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge.<ref name="venn">{{cite web | url = https://archive.org/stream/p2alumnicantabri01univuoft#page/78/mode/2up | title = Alumni Cantabrigienses: Edward Ash | author = J. Ash graduated from Cambridge University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1866; this was automatically converted to a Master of Arts in 1869.<ref name="venn"/> Before graduation, he had joined the staff of Haileybury College as an assistant master in 1865, and he stayed there until he retired in 1902.<ref name="venn"/>
