A pharmacist by vocation, he was a resident of [[L'Isle-Adam, Val-d'Oise|L'Isle-Adam]], a community near [[Paris]]. As a [[taxonomy (biology)|taxonomist]], he was the [[binomial authority]] of many species, most notably within the family [[Orchidaceae]].
