'''Edit Éva Farkas''' is a Hungarian lichenologist and mycologist at the Institute of Ecology and Botany, Centre for Ecological Research in Hungary. She is the author of at least 14 taxon names and author or co-author of over 148 scientific publications.
==Education and personal life== She studied at Eötvös Loránd University public research university in Budapest.<ref name="Stapfia2017">{{cite journal |last1=Hertel |first1=Hannes |last2=Gartner |first2=Georg |last3=Lokos |first3=Laszlo |last4=Farkas |first4=Edit |title=Forscher an Osterrichers Fletchtenflora/ Investigators of Austria's lichen flora |journal=Stapfia |date=2017 |volume=104 |issue=2 |page=40 |url=https://www.zobodat.at/pdf/STAPFIA_0104_2_0001-0211.pdf |access-date=3 November 2023}}</ref> She was awarded an MSc degree in 1982, with a thesis about the effects of air pollution on lichens, supervised by Klára Verseghy and her doctorate in 1987 for the thesis ''Lichenológiai vizsgálatok Budapesten éa a Pilis bioszféra Rezervátumban - elterjedés, bioindikáció'' (''Lichenological investigations in the Pilis Biosphere Reserve in Budapest - distribution, bioindication''). In 2013 she was awarded Dr. habil by Eötvös Loránd University.<ref name="Stapfia2017" /><ref name="Varga_et_al_2019" /> In 2016, she defended her academic doctoral title to become a Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (DSc); her thesis was titled {{lang|hu|A bioindikáció, a biodiverzitás és a kémiai diverzitás összefüggései a lichenológiában. She is married to László Sándor Lőkös, who is also a lichenologist. They have two children together.<ref name="Stapfia2017-2">{{cite journal |last1=Hertel |first1=Hannes |last2=Gartner |first2=Georg |last3=Lokos |first3=Laszlo |last4=Farkas |first4=Edit |title=Forscher an Osterrichers Fletchtenflora/ Investigators of Austria's lichen flora |journal=Stapfia |date=2017 |volume=104 |issue=2 |page=89 |url=https://www.zobodat.at/pdf/STAPFIA_0104_2_0001-0211.pdf |access-date=3 November 2023}}</ref>
==Research career== Since 1982 she has worked the Institute of Ecology and Botany, Centre for Ecological Research, Vácrátót, Hungary being promoted from a junior to senior researcher. She was part of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences between 1982 and 2011.<ref name="Researchgate2023">{{cite web |title=Edit Farkas |url=https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Edit-Farkas-2 |website=Researchgate |access-date=3 November 2023}}</ref>
She is a lichenologist, predominantly a taxonomist using molecular, morphological and chemotaxonomic methods, and has identified many new species and taxa as well as new nomenclature combinations. Throughout her career she has also undertaken fieldwork especially on the effects of the environment, especially pollution, on lichens around Europe. During the 1980s she undertook fieldwork on foliose lichens in the (now) Czech Republic and Tanzania. She has also studied other tropical lichens. In the 1990s and early 2000s she worked extensively on crustose lichens. She spent 1992 at the Natural History Museum, London, collaborating with David J. Galloway and others.<ref name="Stapfia2017" /><ref name="Varga_et_al_2019">{{cite journal |last1=Varga |first1=N |last2=Pifko |first2=D |last3=Kondratyuk |first3=Sergij Y. |last4=Kärnefelt |first4=Ingvar |last5=Thell |first5=Arne |title=Hungarian lichenologists – a 60th birthday tribute. |journal=Studia botanica hungarica |date=2019 |volume=50 |issue=2 |pages=261–292 |doi=10.17110/StudBot.2019.50.2.261 |url=https://doi.org/10.17110/StudBot.2019.50.2.261|url-access=subscription }}</ref> In addition, her research concerns secondary metabolites within the lichen symbiosis, adopting new analytical methodologies as they became available during her career.<ref name="HUNREN">{{cite web |title=FARKAS, EDIT, DSc |url=https://ecolres.hu/en/munkatarsak/edit-farkas/ |website=HUNREN |publisher=ELKH Centre for Ecological Research |access-date=3 November 2023}}</ref> Together with Lőkös, they have characterised 17 new genera and 139 new taxa, and proposed more than 120 new nomenclature combinations.<ref name="Varga_et_al_2019" /> Edit Farkas is publishing the exsiccata ''Lichenes delicati exsiccati editae in memoriam Antonín Vězda (1920–2008)''.<ref>{{cite web |title=Lichenes delicati exsiccati editae in memoriam Antonín Vězda (1920–2008): IndExs ExsiccataID=2147199807 |website=IndExs - Index of Exsiccatae |publisher=Botanische Staatssammlung München |url=https://www.botanischestaatssammlung.de/DatabaseClients/IndExs/Exsiccatae_IndExs_Details.jsp?ExsiccataID=2147199807 |access-date=29 April 2024}}</ref>
