==Background== McCurdy was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1950 as the son of Sherburne McCurdy, an educator who served as president of the Canadian Teachers' Federation, and Elizabeth (née Jefferson).<ref name="enl">{{cite encyclopedia |last=Colbourne|first=B.
