The species was first described as ''Panicum venezuelae'' by Eduard Hackel in 1901. In 2024 Christian Silva and Fernando Omar Zuloaga placed the species in the newly-described genus ''Drakkaria'' as ''Drakkaria venezuelae''.<ref name = powo/>
