Only four species have been named, but indeterminate fossils show that they were abundant across western and eastern-central Europe during the Cretaceous. The family is only known from postcranial remains.<ref name=":0">{{Cite journal|last1=Pérez-García|first1=A.|last2=Cobos|first2=A.|last3=Royo-Torres|first3=R.|date=2017-06-01|title=The oldest evidence of a dortokid turtle (stem Pleurodira) from the uppermost Hauterivian-basal Barremian El Castellar Formation (Teruel, Spain)|url=https://doi.org/10.1007/s41513-017-0013-7|journal=Journal of Iberian Geology|language=en|volume=43|issue=2|pages=139–146|doi=10.1007/s41513-017-0013-7|bibcode=2017JIbG...43..139P |s2cid=135098500 |issn=1886-7995|url-access=subscription}}</ref>
