The '''Donaciinae''' are a subfamily of the leaf beetles, or Chrysomelidae, characterised by densely pubescent underside, generally club-shaped hind femora with one or two ventral teeth, and distinctly long antennae.<ref name=bugref/><ref name=xcit0/> They are found in mainly the Northern Hemisphere, with some species found in the Africa and Australasia.<ref>{{Cite journal|last=Steffan|first=Wallace A.|date=1979-09-28|title=New ''Culex'' (''Acallyntrum'') from the Papuan Subregion (Diptera: Culicidae)1|url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/jmedent/16.2.133|journal=Journal of Medical Entomology|volume=16|issue=2|pages=133–139|doi=10.1093/jmedent/16.2.133|issn=1938-2928|url-access=subscription}}</ref>

== Life cycle == Female Donaciinae lay eggs between aquatic plant stems and leaf sheaths, or on the underside of floating leaves.<ref name=":0">{{Cite journal|last1=LAUX|first1=JAN-JAKOB|last2=KÖLSCH|first2=GREGOR|date=2014-03-05|title=Potential for passive internal dispersal: eggs of an aquatic leaf beetle have been known to survive passage through the digestive system of mallards|url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/een.12097|journal=Ecological Entomology|volume=39|issue=3|pages=391–394|doi=10.1111/een.12097|s2cid=83827948 |issn=0307-6946|url-access=subscription}}</ref> When larvae hatch they are aquatic, and attach themselves to underwater stems and roots of their plant hosts. Host plants of most species consist of diverse plants along the margin of water bodies such as slow moving streams, ponds, and lakes. A few species are found on floating-leaved plants such as Potamogeton, while species of Donacia s.str. are found on the floating leaves of water lilies and Brasenia. Adults live in vegetation bordering ponds, marshes, lakes,<ref name="bugref" /> and brackish water environments.<ref>{{Cite journal|last1=Kölsch|first1=Gregor|last2=Krause|first2=Almut|last3=Goetz|first3=Nele|last4=Plagmann|first4=Silke|date=2010-07-31|title=The salinity preference of members of the genus Macroplea (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Donaciinae), fully aquatic leaf beetles that occur in brackish water|url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jembe.2010.04.026|journal=Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology|volume=390|issue=2|pages=203–209|doi=10.1016/j.jembe.2010.04.026|issn=0022-0981|url-access=subscription}}</ref> While most Donaciinae have the ability to fly, the fully aquatic and flightless ''Macroplea mutica'' can disperse long distances using water birds; its eggs can survive passage though the gut of a bird.<ref name=":0" />
