It was founded in 1970 and was described by its publishing company, BowTie Inc., as "the world’s most widely read dog magazine".<ref>[http://www.bowtieinc.com/bowtieinc/detail.aspx?aid=19434&sts=all BowTie Incorporated<!-- Bot generated title -->] {{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20081005114317/http://www.bowtieinc.com/bowtieinc/detail.aspx?aid=19434&sts=all |date=October 5, 2008 }}</ref> BowTie Inc. also published its sister magazine ''Dog World'', and ''Cat Fancy'' for cats and their owners.

The editorial office was in Irvine, California, and the statement of ownership in the December 2009 issue says the paid circulation was 202,000 copies. In 2014, the circulation was reported as 149,088.<ref>{{cite web |url= http://abcas3.auditedmedia.com/ecirc/magtitlesearch.asp |title=Circulation averages for the six months ended 6/30/2014 |date= June 30, 2014 |publisher= Alliance for Audited Media |accessdate= August 27, 2019 |archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20141223190629/http://abcas3.auditedmedia.com/ecirc/magtitlesearch.asp |archive-date= December 23, 2014 |url-status= dead }}</ref>

In August 2008, it began publishing a quarterly double issue entitled ''Natural Dog'' on the flip side of ''Dog Fancy''. In late 2014, new owners Lumina Media announced that the monthly magazines ''Cat Fancy'' and ''Dog Fancy'' would be combined with the ''Dogster'' and ''Catster'' website brands, alternating bimonthly issues of ''Catster'' and ''Dogster'' beginning in February 2015.<ref>{{cite web |url=http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2014/12/who-killed-cat-fancy.html |title=Who Killed ''Cat Fancy''?|last1=Reisman |first1=Abraham|date=December 11, 2014 |website=NYmag.com|accessdate=December 18, 2014}}</ref> Dogster magazine and website were sold to Belvoir Media Group in April 2017.<ref name="acquired">{{Cite web |url=http://www.thefishercompany.com/news/ |title=Press Release: Belvoir Media Group acquires Catster and Dogster from Lumina Media LLC |publisher=The Fisher Company |date=April 25, 2017}}</ref>
