Kuwait is divided into six governorates, and in each there are several '''areas''' ({{langx|ar|مناطِق}}). They are much less commonly called by other names such as districts or towns. However, they are commonly known inside the English-speaking community in Kuwait and are officially translated to as ''areas''.<ref>{{Cite web|url=https://www.kuna.net.kw/ArticlePrintPage.aspx?id=2144192&language=en|title=KUNA :: Private activities in Jabriya told to vacate premises for major projects 10/02/2011|website=www.kuna.net.kw|accessdate=7 August 2023}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |url=http://mew.gov.kw/en/?com=content&act=view&id=55 |title=Ministry of Electricity and Water |access-date=2015-04-13 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150711041155/http://www.mew.gov.kw/en/?com=content&act=view&id=55 |archive-date=2015-07-11 |url-status=dead }}</ref> The Arabic word for area, '''Mintaqah''', means both ''area'' and ''region''.<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english-arabic/area|title=area | translation English to Arabic: Cambridge Dictionary|accessdate=7 August 2023}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|url=http://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english-arabic/region|title=region | translation English to Arabic: Cambridge Dictionary|accessdate=7 August 2023}}</ref> Areas are further sub-divided into blocks, each of which is referred by a number. All blocks are divided into '''streets''' ({{langx|ar|شارع}}) {{Transliteration|ar|šāriʿ}}. Then some areas may be further sub-divided into ({{langx|ar|جادة}}) {{Transliteration|ar|Jadda}}, which is translated to '''avenue''' or '''lane'''. thumb|Map of the Areas of Kuwait Each area in Kuwait has an official governmental facility called a '''co-op society''' or just '''society''' ({{langx|ar|جمعية}}). They are mainly supermarkets that provide foods and products and they take part in maintaining some of the areas landmarks, but they're not legally obliged to. They have elected members who manage them. Only residents of the area can vote for their society's membership.
