David Stirton

He was born in Angus, Scotland in 1816,<ref name="parl"/> the son of James Stirton.<ref name="johnson">{{cite book |title=The Canadian Directory of Parliament 1867-1967 |last=Johnson |first=J.K. |year=1968 |publisher=Public Archives of Canada |url=https://archive.org/details/canadiandirector0000publ/page/554 |page=554 |url-access=registration}}</ref> His family settled near the current site of Guelph, Ontario in Upper Canada around 1827. Stirton bought his own farm in 1841.<ref name="morgan"/> He served as reeve for Puslinch Township from 1853 to 1857<ref name="parl"/> and was captain in the local militia. He represented South Wellington in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada from 1858 to 1867.<ref name="morgan">{{cite book |url=https://www.canadiana.ca/view/oocihm.32949/326 |page=314 |title=The Canadian Parliamentary Companion |year=1875 |publisher=Montreal Printing and Publishing Company |editor-last=Morgan |editor-first=Henry J. |editor-link=Henry James Morgan |edition=Tenth}}</ref> He was elected in the same riding following Confederation and served until 1876, when he was appointed postmaster for Guelph.<ref name="parl"/> Stirton died in Guelph at the age of 92.<ref name="johnson"/>
