Raw was born at Ossett in November 1944. He studied at St Catharine's College, Cambridge.<ref>{{cite book |title=The Cambridge University List of Members |year=1991 |publisher=Cambridge University Press |page=1114 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=05AcAQAAMAAJ}}</ref> While studying at Cambridge, he made his debut in first-class cricket for Cambridge University against Sussex at Fenner's in 1967.
