David Thomas was brought up in Pontarddulais and Port Talbot in south Wales.<ref>[https://sites.google.com/site/davidnthomasauthor/home David Thomas website]</ref> He studied at Balliol College, Oxford, and the London School of Economics, before working as a community worker in London. He was subsequently a lecturer at the National Institute for Social Work and then Chief Executive at the Community Development Foundation.<ref>[https://sites.google.com/site/davidnthomasauthor/home David Thomas website]</ref> He was also a founder member of the European Community Development Network,<ref>{{Cite web |url=http://eucdn.net/ |title=Latest News & Updates |access-date=2018-07-30 |archive-date=2018-07-26 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180726201704/http://eucdn.net/ |url-status=dead }}</ref> and a Council of Europe Fellow.<ref>[https://sites.google.com/site/davidnthomasauthor/home?authuser=0 David Thomas website]</ref> He has published widely on community development, including ''Skills in Neighbourhood Work'', written with Paul Henderson.<ref>Routledge,1980, five editions, as well as Dutch, French, Polish, Slovak and Croatian translations.</ref>
Thomas retired back to Wales in the early 1990s, and since then has written about the life and death of Dylan Thomas. He has published extensively about Thomas’ associations with both New Quay in Cardiganshire (Ceredigion), and the Llansteffan peninsula in Carmarthenshire. His first book on Thomas, ''A Farm, Two Mansions and a Bungalow'', was published in 2000.
