Between 1964 and 1966, Cohen was a consultant to the NAACP.<ref name="digilibga">{{cite news |title=Cohen, David K., 1934- |url=http://crdl.usg.edu/people/c/cohen_david_k_1934/?Welcome |accessdate=October 5, 2020 |agency=Digital Library of Georgia}}</ref><ref name="asi"/> He then served as director of the Race and Education Project, an initiative of the United States Commission on Civil Rights.<ref name="asi"/><ref name="digilibga"/> Cohen joined the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1968 as a lecturer.<ref name="HGSE">{{cite news |last1=Anderson |first1=Jill |title=HGSE Remembers David Cohen |url=https://www.gse.harvard.edu/news/20/10/hgse-remembers-david-cohen |accessdate=October 5, 2020 |publisher=Harvard Graduate School of Education |date=October 1, 2020}}</ref> The next year, he was named an associate professor, and promoted to full professor in 1971.<ref name="HGSE"/> Cohen retired from Harvard University in 1986.<ref name="HGSE"/> During his time at Harvard, Cohen served concurrently as president of the Huron Institute.<ref name="digilibga"/><ref name="asi"/> He taught at Michigan State University between 1986 and 1993, as the John Hannah Chair within the Department of Education.<ref name="asi"/> Cohen subsequently moved to the University of Michigan, where he was named the John Dewey Collegiate Professor of Education and jointly held a professorship in public policy at the Gerald R.
